Gemini Full Moon on December 13, 2016--Mixed Blessings

The 2016 Gemini Full Moon which falls on December 13, asks us if we choose to see the glass half full or half empty. We'll remember Charles Dicken's opening to A Tale of Two Cities and also Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now". We could feel crazy trying to make a decision because we'll feel we have too many choices. And the best approach is to follow the gray line that falls in between black and white.

Why am I telling you this? The Gemini Full Moon chart contains two T-Crosses, a Mystical Rectangle, a Golden Triangle and a Grand Trine. As someone who was born with a Mutable T-Cross and a Grand Water Trine I have jumped back and forth between extremes. I'm not saying that either I or the Gemini Moon are bi-polar, only that we will gaze at opposite forces inside us. So let's break down this chart and see where that leads us.

First, we have an on-going T-Cross with Jupiter in Libra opposing Uranus/Ceres in Aries and squaring Pluto in Capricorn. Many of us already know about the powerful alignment between Uranus and Pluto. Now, Jupiter comes and expands on that energy while promoting balance and harmony. It's like Jupiter is saying, "Okay, guys you have been fighting for too long. When are you going to make peace?"

And true enough, we see this energy playing out in North Dakota with the Native People promoting peace and healing of the planet while authority in the form of riot police brings in the patriarchal force. Jupiter in Libra and Ceres in Aries asks us to come from our feminine sides. This doesn't mean that we act passive or passive-aggressive. It means that we follow our feelings and get in touch with our hearts. It means that we reach out to others in a nurturing manner. And it means that we hold a place of peace in our hearts.

The Gemini Moon, Sagittarius Sun, and Chiron (in Pisces) form a Mutable T-Cross. So now we have big ideas clashing with smaller ones. We have big religion fighting with political leaders or movements. Remember Pope Francis criticizing Donald Trump last winter? We will see more of that scenario playing out. People who see the bigger picture ignore the details while other get lost in the details because they don't see the bigger vision. And all of this finds roots in childhood wounds. Fighting now is with words and ideas. But the words cut deep so watch what you say to yourself and others during the Gemini Full Moon and the two weeks riding up to the Full Moon.

Now, let's look at the Mystical Rectangle. First, of all this is a "male" rectangle since the planets are represented by Air and Fire. This means that we have a lot of a masculine bravado and possibly immature behavior during the Gemini Full Moon. Planets involved include Saturn/Sun in Sagittarius opposing the Gemini Moon (it's a busy moon) and sextiling Jupiter in Libra and trining Uranus/Ceres in Aries. The message I receive is to balance the masculine and feminine sides for each of us. We will also hear about gay marriages during this moon. It feels like a balancing act and that we must get over our views of male and female roles.

The Golden Triangle includes Uranus/Ceres in Aries (again) forming a sextile with Mars in Aquarius and a trine with Sun/Saturn in Sagittarius. This brings huge tension release from both the Mutable and Cardinal T-Crosses. It's almost as if the tension from the T-Crosses plays in the background. And we seek freedom from anything we find oppressive. We could see droves of people quitting their jobs despite the hectic holiday season, and in spite of it. We could see adults searching for childhood wonder or returning to holiday fun from their past. And we witness innovations that make headlines as we end 2016 and look towards 2017.

And if that's not enough, we experience a Grand Air Trine (when is the last time we experienced a Grand Air Trine)? It includes Jupiter in balancing Libra, Mars in futuristic Aquarius and the Gemini Full Moon. We often ignore the flowing energies of a Grand Trine, but only when planetary tension is absent. We have two T-Crosses bringing us tension so we welcome the blessings of the Grand Air Trine. This Air Quality helps us to detach from drama and chaos in the world. We can actually, take a breather and enjoy ourselves. With Jupiter in Libra, we're feeling optimistic. We're playing on odd logic and we feel like gambling metaphorically or otherwise. But don't bet your house folks, because you could just lose all.

The downside is that megalomaniacs grab the spotlights and they're everywhere. We hear too much about next president Donald Trump and others of a similar ilk. And for some folks, this is pure entertainment and for others, it represents sheer terror. Turn off the television set already. There is way too much talking and not enough listening during this Gemini Full Moon.

However, a Gemini Full Moon is also playful. It asks us to get in touch with our inner child and entertain him or her. And what a better time to do that then during the holidays. So instead of focusing on the chaos and doom in the world, focus on joy, peace, and the holiday spirit. Go do something fun so that you can relax. Then from this relaxed place we come up with innovative solutions to the problems that dog us.

Signs most affected by the Gemini Full Moon are Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces, and Virgo. I recommend that you sign up for a personal reading. It will be worth every dime you spend. I will show you the bigger picture and you can use that picture as your map for 2017 and beyond.

Zodiac Sign Spotlight--Sagittarius (November 21 to December 21)

(Prove the stars wrong, Sagittarius because I'm writing and posting this article when the moon is void-of-course in Libra. This means that the post won't experience success).

What does Jimi Hendrix have in common with Billy Bragg? And what does Taylor Swift have in common with Miranda Otto and Daryl Hannah? They were all born when the Sun traveled through Sagittarius. Other humans on this list include Pope Francis, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Sara Silverman, Tom Waits, Michael Scott of The Waterboys, Ellen Burstyn, Judi Dench, and Jim Morrison, to name a few.

And if you have a Sagittarius Sun then you can join the list of folks with strong ideologies, a powerful sense of destiny, globe-trotters, university professors, religious leaders, politicians, and celebrities who boldly share their opinions. You are a member of a rainbow tribe that spans the globe and your mind expands to include diversity. In fact, you thrive on diversity which is why you itch to travel, learn new languages, and enrich your mind with academics.

You inspire as you hang from that rock ledge high up in the mountains. You inspire when you take home that Olympic Gold. And you are destined to succeed beyond your wildest dreams in someone else' backyard. Because it's true for you that the grass is greener on the other side of the big pond.

Now, the theme song for Sagittarius is "Don't Fence Me In," and any Cancer or Taurus who tried to reign in a Sagittarius ended up with boots covered in dust and chagrin as their Sagittarius friend bolted and ran away like a stallion on steroids. The big word for Sagittarius is freedom. And this freedom revolves around speech, lifestyle, politics, religion, academics and room to roam. In fact, Sagittarius Michael Scott once sung those words, "room to roam."

Sagittarius, like Gemini, represents the storytellers of the Zodiac Wheel. And some of the world's best storytellers include Tom Waits, Billy Bragg, Walt Disney, and any number of authors born during the last week of November and first three weeks of December. All Sagittarius artists no matter their medium tell stories.

And if they're not artists, then they pontificate while sharing stories at universities or on Ted Talks (a forum that must have been invented for Sagittarius). Or you find them at community gatherings (often drunk) sharing a story or two with wild humor tossed in. The downside though is Sagittarius tells off-color jokes from time to time. Some Sagittarius are racist and tell ethnic jokes. While others such as Woody Allen, poke fun at their own ethnic group.

Sagittarius excel in careers where they don't clock in or work in a structured environment. Nine-to-five does not work for these folks. Even the actors would rather film on location in a foreign country. And even then, the producers better allow time for these actors to explore the location. Or at the very least, give the actors books to read or interesting people to interact with as they wait for long hours to shoot their scenes. And in any case, they'll probably arrive late on the set and depart as soon as possible.

Downside of Sagittarius is that many can't commit to a traditional relationship. They require a partner who is interesting or adventurous such as someone they see as a buddy who goes rock climbing or snowboarding with them. They enjoy conversations with well-educated or well-traveled soul mates. Although they give a worldly impression, they also join groups or beliefs that curtail another group's rights.

They blow hot air. They expect everyone to agree with their opinions that they present as well-read facts. They can't stay in one place for very long because the grass is greener somewhere else. They drink too much alcohol and expect others to clean up the mess they leave in their wake. They're also most likely to leave the one they're with rather than love the one they're with, but these are all generalizations.

Remember that a person is more than their Zodiac Sun Sign. Each of us has 10 planets plus asteroids in our Natal Charts which fall in various signs and houses. So not all Sagittarius or any sign is alike. But all Sagittarius people are represented by the horse and the satyr (part human/part horse). All Sagittarius bring brightness during the late fall months. They might struggle with ethics, but only if they don't own their shadows (a lesson we learn from Scorpio).

The biggest transits for Sagittarius in 2017 are Saturn in Sagittarius, Neptune in Pisces, and Uranus in Aries. Saturn in your own sign curtails your freedom of expression and brings you complications with travel and immigration. Neptune in Pisces leaves you wondering what is real and what is fantasy. Uranus in Aries fires you up and you join grassroots efforts and get involved with humanitarian causes. You might also raise your children in a way that raises eyebrows and has people gossiping about you.

All Sagittarius have strong political and religious views that they boldly share with others, especially when they're drunk. Their element is Fire and their quality is Mutable which means they are passionate and restless for change. Your planet is Jupiter which bring you good fortune and your Tarot card is The Wheel of Fortune. So roll your dice, Sagittarius and you'll come out a winner.

Whole Astrology Forecast for 2017

I don't see any major transits for 2017, but I doubt it is a status quo year. The North Node transits into Leo and Jupiter transits into Scorpio. Eclipses land in Pisces, Leo, and Aquarius so we move more into Fixed energy. Venus retrogrades in Aries and Pisces at the beginning of the year leaving us with a theme of the Divine Feminine.

We won't be experiencing any Saturn-Neptune Squares, but we are experiencing Saturn-Chiron squares since Saturn remains in Sagittarius until December. We also won't experience Mars staying for several months in a single sign, as we did in early 2016. I also want us to remember that Uranus will only be in Aries for another two years. That means, we only have two years to shake up the old system so that we can rebuild new structure when Uranus transits into Taurus in 2019, joining a cluster of outer planets in Capricorn. Astrologers are already setting their eyes on 2020 as if it is the beginning of a Golden Age. And it might be if we do the necessary work now.

January--We launch the year with the tail end of Mercury in Retrograde in Sagittarius. The quicksilver planet goes direct on the 7th. Venus transits into Pisces on the 5th and joins Mars, Neptune and Chiron in the Sign of the Fish. With all this Pisces energy and Neptune moving into a wide sextile with Pluto, our minds are on our spiritual paths and resolutions of a spiritual nature. Spiritual movies hit the cinemas. Music and dance also capture our attention. We get caught up in glitz and glamor, not seeing the truth beneath the surface. Be weary of relationships that begin in January as we are wearing rose-colored glasses. We worship the feminine mystique and the new glamor girls on the scene. Photography also grabs headlines.

February--Venus moves into Aries where this planet finds discomfort and Mars feels powerful in Aries. Mars conjuncts Uranus on the 26th, but you can feel the power of this duet earlier in the month. Mars square with Pluto around the 20th also proves troublesome unless we use this energy to transform our lives. However, we can also see big players controlling and manipulating youth or grassroots groups. Definitely, we'll witness some heated situations around the world and this time could feel volatile. Uranus and Mars fire up Saturn in Sagittarius and Jupiter in Libra (which forms a sextile with Saturn) attempts to bring balance and harmony. This month is volatile so keep your wits about you. Jupiter goes retrograde on February 6.

We experience a Lunar Eclipse in Leo on the 11th and a Solar Eclipse on the 26 in Pisces. This will only add heat to the cauldron.

March--Venus joins Jupiter as the second RX planet for 2017. Mars moves into stable Taurus and we feel more grounded. We sweep up the debris caused by events of the previous month. Mars joins up with Ceres in Taurus so our minds turn towards the Divine Feminine and agriculture. A Fire Trine between Saturn and Uranus launch the month off with an enthusiastic attitude. However, Jupiter moves into a square with Pluto so we seek both transformation and balance/harmony. There could be situations where women stand up to men in a mass consciousness manner.

April--Venus in Pisces goes direct on the 15th, but Saturn goes RX on the 6th. Mercury goes RX on the 9th and Pluto goes RX on the 20th. This makes for an unstable time with several planets switching directions. By the end of the month, four planets are RX causing us to turn inward for answers. Uranus and Saturn continue their Fire Trine which gives us energy. Mars stays direct this year helping us to get work done. But with Saturn RX, we lack discipline.

May--The big astrological event is the North Node transiting into Leo. We move from the service energy of Virgo into a self-centered energy of the Fire Sign, Leo. We focus on the individual instead of the Greater Good. Jupiter forms an inconjunct with another gaseous planet, Neptune which has us questioning the spiritual beliefs of others. However, we project our own irritations onto others instead of owning what is ours. At least Mercury in Aries goes direct on the 2nd. Venus in Aries brings out the warrior side of women, and since Ceres is in Gemini, women gather and communicate.

June--Venus moves into Taurus and forms a sextile with Mars in Cancer. Now our thoughts and feelings turn to food and relaxation. We focus on children and mothers and real estate. Jupiter in Libra goes direct on the 9th and forms trines with the Gemini Sun and Mercury in Gemini. Unfortunately, the sun and Mercury square Neptune in Pisces. June is a mixed bag, but with Jupiter direct we can at least put steam behind our projects. Families head on vacation and flock to the ocean or the countryside. June actually looks like the best month thus far. Neptune goes RX on the 15th. For some folks, this brings more clarity and less fog, but for others, Neptune RX brings feelings of disorientation.

July--We begin the month with the sun, Mercury, and Mars in Cancer and Venus in Taurus. So we start out July in a manner similar to June's transits. Cancer is pushy when it comes to mothering, nutrition, real estate, and possessions. The planets transiting in Cancer eventually oppose Pluto, and square Jupiter and Uranus so this brings us combustible energies. Mars/Mercury, Jupiter, and Pluto engage in a Cardinal T-Cross at the beginning of the month. Jupiter in Libra acts as the apex as it tries to bring balance to the Mars/Mercury-Pluto opposition. Tempers run high at the beginning of July and people could act impetuous or pull an entitlement act. Ceres moves into Cancer mid-month and we turn towards issues around food and agriculture. No more of those GMOs, we shout.

Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto continue in retrograde motion which at least calms the Cardinal storms. However, when Saturn is RX we tend to procrastinate and lay about. So take a vacation in July and use the Taurus-Cancer energies to heal yourself.

August--The big news this month is the Lunar Eclipse at 15 degrees Aquarius/Leo and the Solar Eclipse at 28 degrees Leo. We are now experiencing eclipses in Fixed Signs. While this is not as bombastic as an eclipse in a Cardinal Sign or as life-changing as an eclipse in a Mutable Sign, now we're dealing with obstinate people and situations. We experience narcissism versus humanitarianism. The collective goes to battle with egomaniac leaders. The good news is that Saturn goes direct on the 24th and then over the next months transits out of Sagittarius into its own sign Capricorn.

Meanwhile, Uranus goes retrograde at the beginning of the month. This calms the seas in that we can expect fewer surprises or proverbial lightening bolts when Uranus is RX. However, Mercury in Virgo goes RX on the 13th. And some people will experience problems with their neurological system. Anxiety could increase since Virgo and Gemini affect the nervous system and Virgo leans towards worrying which leads to anxiety. Take a cue from Neptune and Chiron in Pisces and meditate to calm the mind and get into the heart.

September--Mercury goes direct in Leo on the 5th. While Venus and Mars (not conjunct) dance in Leo and we all feel sparkle in our partnerships. Sex drives, attraction, and sensuality are at their height at the start of the month. Then Mars moves into Virgo (not a comfortable transit for Mars) and we must curb the tendency to become hypercritical of our mates. No one will ever be perfect, but we are perfect in our evolution. Jupiter in Libra joins Saturn in Sagittarius in a sextile which also bodes well for a live-and-let-live type of partnerships. We all strive for harmony which is a contradiction in terms. At the end of the month, we experience a jolt as Pluto goes direct. This feels like a sleeping giant waking up. Try to avoid people with control issues or power plays.

October--Jupiter moves out of the Cardinal Air Sign Libra into the Fixed Water Sign Scorpio. We notice an expansive energy in the areas of death, birth, fertility, taxes, inheritance, DNA, lineages, and all themes Scorpio. We desire to go deep with others. And we desire intimacy where we brave our souls and confess our deepest secrets. This happens for the next 12 months since Jupiter stays in a sign for 12 months. And speaking of intimacy, Venus catches up to Mars and they couple in the sign of Virgo. This could lead to purification of intentions in a partnership. Or it we want to deal with practical day-to-day matters. Neptune forms a sextile with Pluto which also focuses on relationships. Are we realistic? Are we transforming from the relationship? This is a time of intense spiritual relationships, even with ourselves--especially with ourselves.

November--Neptune goes direct on the 21st and now only Uranus remains RX. This means we experience forward motion in our lives without Uranus tossing in surprises. Venus and Mars in Libra (though not conjunct) bring balance and harmony to relationships. However, I have the impression that many women are demanding more freedom and liberties in November. A glamorous woman in the media headlines surprises us with deep spiritual practices and inner wisdom. She ignites the hearts of other women who launch a new type of feminism. The Scorpio Sun joins Jupiter at the beginning of the month and we shine the light on secrets. I have a strong feeling that much is revealed to us on all fronts in November 2017. This revelation leads to new lifestyle and convictions. Set intentions for the highest good.

December--The big news this last month of the year is Saturn moving into its own sign, Capricorn on the 21st around the Solstice. What a powerful message about self-reliance, climbing the mountain, and improving finances (on a mundane level). We remember MLK's "Top of the Mountain" speech. We also wish to bring justice to the land. Although we hardly ever hear about it, Capricorn does have a compassionate and generous side. Mercury in Sagittarius goes RX from the 4 -22. At the beginning of the month, we have several planets in the Sign of the Satyr including Mercury, Venus, the sun, and Saturn. We are feeling benevolent this holiday season. Enthusiasm oozes out of most people. There is a large world stage event that happens around politics or religion that puts zest in our steps. The downside is that we could just grab onto hot air or rise above everything as if we are in a hot air balloon. When we drink too much, we wake up the next morning hungover.

Please note that this is just an overview and I will give fuller monthly transits in 2017. Think of this as a yearly weather report so you can follow trends. Sign up for a personal reading. Fixed Signs (Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius, and Taurus) get some action via the transits in 2017. I especially encourage you to sign up for a yearly overview reading. Thank you and happy holidays!

Sagittarius New Moon on November 29, 2016--Things aren't What They Seem

Normally, I love a new or full Sagittarius Moon because it brings out the dreamer or adventurer in us. However, the Sagittarius New Moon that lands on November 29 is full of hot air and deception. The sun and moon square Neptune. And at the same time, Venus in Capricorn squares Uranus in Aries. So this deception plays out in relationships between the masculine and feminine.

Use discernment in all dealings, but especially in relationships. If you meet someone new who you would like to date, wait two weeks before asking this person out. Use this time to do spiritual work through meditation and other forms of contemplation. People we meet during the week of this full moon might not pan out. In any case, go slow with anyone you meet and do not throw caution to the wind. With all this Mutable energy we are reminded of the series of Saturn-Neptune squares that we witnessed over the past year.

To give you an idea of this powerful Mutable energy, just look at the recent election in the US and the situation with Brexit in the UK. All of this is heightened during the Sagittarius New Moon at the end of November and going into December's Full Gemini Moon. We've all made some bad decisions during the past several months, especially during the summer months because we didn't have all the facts and no one was thinking clearly.

Remember that both Saturn and Neptune are large powerful planets that build and dissolve structure. Even time and space appear to be slipping away. They are as some of us ascend into higher dimensions.

In fact, I found this incredible video on YouTube about stepping out of the Matrix. This would be a good plan to follow especially around the Sagittarius New Moon squaring Neptune in Pisces. Unfortunately, I'm not able to find the video again. But basically, the message was that we need to stop tuning into the outer world and find our true power within. Focus on self and our unique path now. Don't engage in toxic conversations that are obviously fear-based. And if this means you must spend time alone, then do that. Go on a little adventure such as a day hike or hang out near the ocean or any body of water (Neptune). And don't believe the hype.

Let's take a look at the Cardinal T-Cross with Jupiter in Libra, Venus/Pluto in Capricorn and Uranus/Ceres in Aries. Now, what I'm feeling is that women and ethnic groups are fighting-mad. They don't like how the US Presidential Election or other events have played out in the world. Obviously, they feel threatened. But don't use this energy to clobber yourself with doom. This is about taking back power no matter who is in government. Stop focusing on outer power and outer trappings of the world. Venus in Capricorn and Jupiter in Libra actually favor women. The sun/moon in Sagittarius favors ethnic groups. But what needs to happen is that we must stop hanging out in separate camps.

The only way power mongers of the world can control us, is if we allow this to happen. Their main method of dealing with the masses is to divide and conquer. They turn women against women. They turn whites against minorities. They turn this religion against that religion. And this is madness. Our job is to respect Diversity but create Unity from it. Our job is to create the rainbow tribe that appears in the prophecies of Indigenous people around the world. We are the Rainbow Tribe. Our job is to get out of our egos/minds and into our heart/souls. This is the challenge is presented now to us through both the Cardinal T-Cross and the moon/sun square to Neptune and then Chiron which is also transiting in Pisces.

Meanwhile, my guides are asking me to look for the Virgo North Node which forms a tight Mutable T-Cross with Neptune in Pisces and the sun/moon in Sagittarius. Now, the sun/moon forms the apex of this T-Cross and Gemini acts as the outlet. The message I'm getting is yes, we have some serious service to perform on the planet at this time, of a spiritual nature. But we can do this through laughter and with smiles on our faces. The apex planets tell us to lighten up and see life as an adventure, but not to believe everything we hear. Gemini which provides the outlet for the T-Cross asks us to have fun with others. Write, talk, and express our spiritual beliefs (Neptune in Pisces). Engage with like-minded people on social media. Join this tribe now.

There's a lot going on in this chart which I can't get into for this blog post. However, in general, a Sagittarius New Moon asks us to look at Ninth House themes (law, travel, higher education, religion, world culture, adventure, and ethnic minorities). It's a time of expansiveness but also hyperbole. It's a time when people's ideologies clash (which we have been experiencing too much this year). The moon represents our inner selves and emotions, as well as, how we reflect our ideals in the world. The sun represents our masculine side and how others see us showing up in the world.

This new moon does not bode well for any of the signs starting new intimate relationships. However, there is one caveat at that is Capricorn since Venus is in Capricorn, but expect a powerful spiritual partnership. Jupiter in Libra bodes well for Libras, but Libra has a tendency to gloss over people and tries to bring harmony to discordant situations. Therefor Libra, refrain from starting any new partnerships this month.

Cardinals Marching On (Cancer, Capricorn, Libra and Aries)

By Patricia Herlevi
Do you have your sun, moon, or Rising Sign in a Cardinal Sign? Do you have several planets in a Cardinal Sign? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then welcome to the Cardinal tribe. You are on the planet to usher in changes, but first, you must face your fears.

What does Cardinal energy represent? Think of seasons bursting forth throughout the year. Think of the Solstices and Equinoxes. Think of the power of the moon, the structures Saturn builds, the assertiveness of Mars, and the balancing act of Venus. Cardinal energy also represents the four directions and where we ultimately point our compass. Cardinal energy initiates change, but then the Mutable Signs take it from there and continue the changes until they reach a culmination point, at which time, the Fixed Signs stabilize the new structures.

Think of analog photography. The photographer took a photograph by shining light onto negatives. Then the photographer processed the film which created negatives. He or she used a chemical process that developed the negatives which were later used to make prints. Prints are developed in a series of chemicals which end with fixing the chemicals on the paper. This is how the qualities of Cardinal, Mutable, and Fixed work with astrology.

Aries is the first Cardinal Sign to appear on the Zodiac Wheel. And some astrologers start the new year, not on January 1, but on the Spring Equinox when the sun moves into Aries. Some astrologers wait until the sun moves into Taurus. When the sun moves into Aries, at least in the northern hemisphere, we see the first buddings of spring. In some parts of the world, we see a burst of green. Spring is often represented by baby animals, rebirth, and of course, religious and pagan celebrations representing new life.

photography by Patricia Herlevi
Out of the four Cardinal Signs, Aries ruled by Mars is seen as aggressive. While Aries gets a lot of credit for this pushiness and even aggressiveness thanks to Mars, all Cardinal Signs are pushy, including delicate Cancer and sweet Libra. Each sign has light and shadow. And each sign contains its opposite sign's qualities. So that delicate Cancer is also a Capricorn career-climber. And that Libra is also a weekend warrior.

The big lesson with the Cardinal Signs is to face one's fears. Aries brings courage but this doesn't mean that Aries doesn't have any fears. Libra represents balance, but many Libras are on the planet to learn how to have harmonious relationships. Capricorns came here to overcome obstacles through surrender and not by enlisting more determination and will-power. Cancer came here to act as their own mother. And if they had complicated relationships with their birth mothers, they must heal the wounds sustained from those relationships.

People with prominent Cardinal Signs in their Natal Charts are natural leaders. However, we're not talking about the old leadership models. Cardinal Signs must lead by example. This means that the Saturn lessons of integrity, the moon's lessons of self-reflection (without turning into a narcissist), Venus' lessons of balance and harmony, and Mar's lessons of assertiveness and standing up for his or herself, must be integrated. Then, and only then, do we become true leaders who rule by fairness.

While it might seem like a generalization to say that men or people with dominant male energy do better with Fire and Air Signs and those of us who embody feminine energies work better with Water and Earth energies, this isn't always the case. However, I've seen more men than not struggle with Cancer and Capricorn. And I've seen more women struggle with Aries or Mars energy. Oddly, Libra, a male sign rules Venus, a female planet. I have seen Libra men suffer from passive-aggressive tendencies and have trouble making decisions. And remember a strong leader must make decisions on a regular basis. Thankfully, Aries represents the flip side of Libra.

photography by Patricia Herlevi
So the best way to work with Cardinal energies is to make friends with the moon, Mars, Saturn, and Venus. We all love Venus and what this planet bestows on us. Who doesn't want to feel like they're starring in a Jane Austen novel or hanging out at social events observing the protocol of others? But we also must master Saturn which revolves around taking responsibility, practicing integrity, and building solid structures which requires patience.

And we must temper Mar's hotheaded energy and channel it into launching products or mustering courage to set proper boundaries. Mars is more about saying "no" than yes. And then even moon-gazers realize the powerful emotions that the moon evokes in us. People with a little grasp of the moon's energy, often end up dealing with substance or alcohol abuse. Or they end up suffering from neuroses such as dissociation or anger management issues.

So here is the breakdown of the Cardinal Signs with elements.

Aries is represented by Fire and rules Mars.
Cancer is represented by Water and rules the moon.
Libra is represented by Air and rules Venus.
Capricorn is represented by Earth and rules Saturn.

Currently, three outer planets are transiting in Cardinal Signs. Pluto is in Capricorn, Uranus is in Aries and Jupiter is in Libra. In 2016 and 2017, Jupiter opposes Uranus which can lead to interesting and unexpected manifestations that ultimately leads to social justice.

Taurus Full Moon for November 14, 2016--Fullness & Challenges

I'm not sure if I enjoy the Taurus New or Taurus Full Moon best. The moon is exalted in Taurus and brings a sense of abundance and fullness to our lives. However, every moon is different depending on other transits happening in the moon chart. So let's take a look at this month's Taurus Full Moon which lands on November 14, 2016.

Right off the bat, we have a Cardinal T-Cross with Jupiter in Libra opposing Uranus/Ceres in Aries and squaring Pluto in Capricorn. Granted, this is a wide T-Cross, but powerful with three outer planets involved, nonetheless. In this case, Pluto plays the role of the apex so a transformation is at stake. The type of transformation has to do with where transiting Pluto falls in your natal chart via the transit.

In this chart set for Seattle, Pluto and Mars transit in the Third House of Communication/Education/Thinking Patterns/Short Distance Travel. This has me wondering if some type of mass transportation or mass communication is triggered. Mars can represent boys and cars, as well as, sports or sporting event. Uranus and Ceres fall in the 6th House of the daily environment, health, and service. And Jupiter is falling in the 12th House of the hidden. I'll let you draw up a scenario with those themes.

However, I see possibly a large accident with traffic leading to a sporting event around this time. A health care crisis with emergency workers could also crop up and a hidden agenda with the justice system. And this is just the T-Cross landing on Seattle's coordinates for the Taurus Full Moon.

For individuals, we must look at where these planets transit in our natal charts. Something in our lives requires changing as it has reached its culmination point (full moon). These are areas of our lives where we have applied stubborn will and possibly selfishness as we cling to material goods or status. If we have done our work we can expect to experience abundance and prosperity but from  a take-it-or-leave-it standpoint.

So next up, look where the Taurus Moon and Scorpio Sun fall in your natal chart. For the Seattle chart, the Moon falls in the 7th House and the Sun in the 1st House, along with Mercury. This tells me that individuals want to dig deep into their own psychology and don't want to deal with the emotions of others. And they find other people's agendas selfish. The message is that if we choose to manifest our desires, it's an inside job and we can't look outside of us for help. This is a self-serving time and people want to engage in their senses.

This isn't a problem if we know that each of us has the power to manifest within us. So we set our intentions or harvest our intention from the Taurus New Moon from last spring. Then, and only then, do the right people flow into our lives at the right time. These are the right people to align with and manifest together. This could even represent people meeting soulmates because it's time to team up and work on a shared life mission that has something to do with the earth or agriculture.

This also brings up another message about big banks. It's time to pull your money from those banks and consider either smaller regional banks that haven't sold out. Or consider joining a credit union. The reason why I'm bringing this up is the Taurus Moon could rule banks and financial institutions as can Pluto in Capricorn which is locked into a Cardinal T-Cross. I've received red flags recently for my own bank which is now charging fees for just about everything. My credit card company is raising my interest rate four percent and I'm sure this is happening to just about everyone. A Taurus Full Moon can represent greed as much as it can enjoyment.

Fortunately, we have Uranus and Ceres stirring up the grassroots. And Jupiter in Libra stirring up the justice system as well as, balance in relationships of all kinds. This brings me to another point, and that is Jupiter in Libra is so far playing out in the arena of marriage. I've seen headlines about divorce courts and whatnot. I know of at least one Libra who is debating if she should divorce her husband or just remain legally separated. And I believe other Libras and Aries are experiencing similar situations. It's time to weigh the scales of personal and global justice.

Consider that you might have a soulmate that you won't meet unless you severe your current marriage. This doesn't mean that you vilify your partner. It just means that you cut legal ties and hit the open road metaphorically speaking. For many Libras and Aries people, you have ended chapters and it's time to welcome your new tribe into your life and your new life path. You do this by clearing the air and cutting cords, especially legal ones that curtail your freedom. You were born under signs that enjoy your freedom and social justice.

Now, the Full Taurus Moon bodes well for Virgo, Taurus, and Capricorn. It brings earthy and sensual experiences. This full moon asks you to get out in nature, garden if you're in a warm enough climate, hug trees, hike in the mountains, and take care of your health through physical exercise. I see detoxing in store for Virgo. I get a sense that Taurus people heal a longtime chronic illness through energy healing work. And Capricorn experiences a pleasant financial windfall.

The Water Signs, Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio also benefit from this full moon which is exalted in Cancer. Cancer is it time to take care of any health concerns. You do this through a good swim, a long walk, or rest. It's also time to spend with your children if you happen to have any or your pets. Pisces find they have more stability in their lives during this full moon. And it is a good time to do practices that bring a sense of grounding such as yoga, dance, and breathing exercises. Try singing and dance too. Since this full moon opposes Scorpio, it's time to get in touch with your inner power and grounding that power into manifestation. Try to relax your stubborn will during this time.

Fire Signs Leo, Sagittarius, and Aries find the Taurus Full Moon slow and plodding. Sure, you enjoy indulging in food and drink, but you're not going to laze about like some of the other signs. Use this time to eat a healthier diet and find a form of exercise that excites you. Leo feels challenged by the moon because it squares Leo. Everyone seems selfish to you but how much of that is a projection, Leo? Sagittarius and Aries find the Taurus Moon irritating. They just launched new energy with the Aries Moon only to hit a standstill with the Taurus Moon. This will pass.

Air Signs Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra, since your minds are quicksilver you also don't enjoy the slowness of the Taurus Full Moon. You want to engage in lively conversations while everyone seems to lull and speaking in grunts instead of actual language. You want to invent, innovate, and get people moving in the right direction, but they're hung up on food and other sensual experiences. Use this moon to rest your nerves since Air Signs tend to suffer from nervous energy that can lead to disease. Take this time to get energy healing or a massage. I'd say take a long bath, but that will leave you feeling antsy.

Take the time to slow down, no matter what your sign. For many of us, this is a time of rapid manifestation which we must ground into physical reality. We use the moon's solid energy to manifest desires into concrete experiences. For some of you, this is a new home and for others, it's a new career or financial success after a long struggle. The only caveat is that Cardinal T-Cross which brings transformation through challenges.

Whole Astrology--Gaze at US General Election Night Chart

No matter how much I preferred that the months crawled instead of sped up to the General Election in the United States, the election is a few days away. And the chart for the election has some long-running themes in it. First, we have the Uranus-Pluto Square activated by Jupiter in Libra. Neptune and Saturn still play roles and we can expect a surprise on this election.

I set the chart for Seattle at the close of the polls on the west coast of the US. This means that everyone has cast their vote, but the count remains. So let's do a quick run through of this chart.

Notice how the planets are appearing on half the chart and it's the half that has to do with partnership and "the other". The North Node however, falls in the Third House of Communication so there is a fateful message at stake.

And I feel that the message is coming from the general populace and it is directed at corporate media, big government, and the corporate world that runs the show. The message is grassroots and it comes from our feminine side with Uranus conjunct Ceres in the 10th House. Chiron also appears in the 10th House and it speaks of wounds sustained by the American people caused by the fake economy and puppet government we have endured. Righteous anger comes through loud and clear. People aren't going to vote the way they're expected to. There's a wildcard about to be played by the people (Uranus).

Now, Uranus is going to battle with the system represented by Pluto in Capricorn. Mars is also in the last degree of Capricorn. It's representing children and the people ruled by the government. Mars is exalted in Capricorn and in its last degree of a sign plays a significant role. The message of power to the people sounds the battle cry, but we're not talking the traditional battle here. Look to the internet (Uranus) where the true rebellion has taken place not just during the past months but during the past decades. People have had enough of voting for criminals and dealing with underhanded dealings on their hard-earned dimes.

Jupiter, also in the T-Cross with Pluto and Uranus, suggests that we want to restore balance and we're looking at a Venusian leader to do that for us. We are looking for justice, cooperation, and peace. We want to join the tribal rainbow instead of dealing with divisive leaders who tear families apart and destroy a sense of community. People are basically good and that good will prevail. Just look at the Moon and Neptune in Pisces in the 9th House. We are working towards diplomacy with the greater planet. We are desiring peace between nations and not bombing other nations.

This message is further highlighted with Venus in the 6th House in Sagittarius and Saturn getting ready to move into the 6th House. This is the daily environment and in this chart suggest that we want to beautify our daily environment and take care of our health, both as individuals and as a collective. Actually, I find this chart amazing in its breadth and scope. It moves us away from selfish pursuits and has our eyes on the Greater Good. We could even get a woman as a president, but it's not going to be Hilary Clinton who is not representative of Venus or Libra. She is more Mars energy. She presents the Patriarchal system, and not where we're heading.

Donald Trump represents a prehistoric mentality and is too much of a thug to rule a country with people thinking about the Greater Good. The Sun and Mercury in Scorpio falling in the 5th House tells us that we're digging beneath the superficial surface. We're not going to play games anymore or be used as pawns. We're tired of gambling our future away and so this time, we're going to toss in the curve ball. Whether Bernie Sanders gets elected by write-in votes or Jill Stein rises in the fake polls and take the White House or Gary Johnson does, it's going to be an interesting night. We just don't really know what's going to happen, but Venus is finally running the show.

Artist Spotlight--Eva Cassidy (Patron Saint of Obscurity), Part Two

The late Eva Cassidy wasn't just any singer-guitarist. Astrologically-speaking, she has the making of a saint in her birth chart. I believe that many artists have promoted themselves from beyond the grave. And with so many medium-channels on the planet at this time and the fact that we're all channeling to one degree or another, it's not unplausible that any of us can tap into the dead by following what we call synchronicity.

Before I get into part two of my Eva Cassidy spotlight, I want to share a story with you. During the fall of 1983, my mother and I were passing through a department store and I came across a section where the store sold electronic keyboards. Now, I first want to say that I have never had any piano lessons and yet, I went into a trance when I placed my hands on an electronic keyboard and someone played music through me.

Around two decades later when I was watching the fake documentary, 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould, I heard a man chuckling. It was the late Glenn Gould who had died a year prior to my department store experience. And my thoughts returned to the scene in the department store when I woke up from the trance and people were applauding. My mother had turned to me and said, "When did you learn to play the piano?" I hadn't, but Glenn Gould introduced me to the world of channeling, long before I had an interest in it. Incidentally, when I performed my own music years later, I told people that I channeled the songs, but I don't know from where I channeled those songs.

Recently, the late Eva Cassidy found me on YouTube. Oddly, in my 30 years as an arts journalist, I had not heard of this obscure singer, not even after she enjoyed posthumous fame and people shared her demos with the world. A black and white image of Eva caught my attention on YouTube and she seemed familiar to me so I clicked on the video. I was blown away by her immaculate vocal phrasing and emotional coloring of her songs. I fell in love with Eva and I'm referring to Universal Love. And I wanted to know, who are you so that led me to look at her birth and other astrology charts.

This is part two of my exploration. This article is for the intermediate astrology students or expert astrologer as it is technical. Feel free to view my Astro Cheat Sheet if you're not versed in astrology. I will do my best not to speak in jargon, but I admit that astrologers are sometimes the equivalent of tech people. However, when I refer to Ram, I'm referring to Aries.

We're going to look at two Solar Return (birthday charts) from 1993, the year Eva was first diagnosed with skin cancer and 1996, the year Eva died from skin cancer that lodged into her organs. I also want to call your attention to Jupiter which plays important roles in the transits and planetary progressions (our birth planets progress by degrees and signs during our lifetime).

Now, Jupiter is both a benefactor in that it brings us good luck, but it also brings expansion in ways that are not to our liking such as with disease. I believe too that Jupiter can represent fate and our soul path, as it did for Joan of Arc who had Jupiter attached to her fate.

In the 1993 Solar Return chart, we can see that Eva had completed a Saturn Return and we know from her birth chart that she was born with her Sun conjunct Saturn in Aquarius. Her Natal Mercury was in Capricorn which rules the skin along with Saturn. Saturn Returns often are a time of huge transformation that comes through life events.

For me, my Saturn Return represented a time of illness (that spanned over a decade). I think Eva's Saturn Return also brought illness, but with a huge spiritual component. I say this because, at that time, Uranus joined Neptune in Capricorn (which rules skin, sudden events, spiritual breakthroughs, and music). Uranus and Neptune were transiting Eva's Natal Mercury in her Fourth House of home/mother/ancestry. So Uranus brought a sudden event to the homefront, but with a spiritual component signified by Mercury.

Now, I don't know anything about Eva's spirituality or spiritual path. But I do know that when outer planets conjunct each other in an angular house in a birth chart (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th houses), something major occurs. And she also completed her Saturn Return which acts as a major turning point in a young adult's life. In fact, it is a rite of passage. When many people are diagnosed with cancer of any kind, they turn within and often times, they turn to spiritual practices to make sense of the illness. A Uranus transit in Eva's chart is doubly important too because Uranus is the ruling planet of her chart along with Venus (Ruling planet of her Rising Sign Libra). Venus can represent health in an astrology chart and with a Libra Ascendant, any imbalance to the body (too much sun for instance) could result in disease. Libra rules the scales.

This causes my eyes to roam over to Eva's Sixth House which rules health among other themes. Venus transits at 29 degrees Pisces. Both Pisces and 29 degrees represent endpoints or dissolution in the case of Pisces. Pisces in the Sixth House can also represent victims, martyrs, saints, or servants. Here is someone who loved her work (not just her musical career). She saw her work as a spiritual service. As Venus transited through this house, it could very well usher in a time of illness.

I remember the opening scene from French filmmaker Agnes Varda's movie, Cleo 5 to 7 in which Cleo receives a Tarot card reading. The Tarot reader points to a Venus card and says that Venus, in this case, represents bad health. Cleo is later diagnosed with cancer which is her worst fear coming true. Yet, the character makes peace with the diagnosis.

Now, I don't know the date when Eva's doctor diagnosed her with skin cancer, but a Solar Return chart predicts events for the upcoming Solar year (until the next birthday). Having Venus transiting through the Sixth House in the last degrees of Pisces is referring to transcendence--or a time of dissolution of matter. Transiting Venus also represented creating beauty through daily work. Eva worked as a landscaper in her day job and her music certainly contributed beauty to the planet.

We also see the North Node in Zodiac Cancer approaching Natal Venus in the Third House. So this tells me that Eva was communicating a fateful message. North Nodes represent fate and the Third House represents communication as well as, learning and thinking styles. Having Natal Venus in the Third House again is about communicating beauty in the world. She would also suffer from a tendency towards perfection. Someone with Venus in the Third House would also make an excellent public speaker, radio host, or vocalist. Venus rules the throat and vocalist and the Third House again represents communication.

Venus rules the Second House and we see Pluto transiting through Eva's Second House of talents, skills, values, and in her case, musical gifts. Pluto transits in Scorpio, it's own sign, and Scorpio and Pluto represent death, rebirth, and transformation. Pluto can also rule cancer, radiation treatment, and our facing the darker side of life.

Transiting Jupiter (in Libra) crossed the Ascendant in 1992 and moved into Eva's First House. When Jupiter transited into Scorpio, it connected with Eva's Neptune. This is important to know because Jupiter is working on achieving balance by expanding upon Eva's identity with herself, not to mention calling attention to any imbalances in the body. Jupiter expands what it touches. And when Jupiter transited in Eva's Twelfth House it connected with Pluto (in Virgo) so my guess is that cancer was already forming in Eva's body as early as 1992 or her lifestyle was out of balance which would create cancer. Jupiter always expands what it touches, even disease.

Three years later, in 1996, Eva turned 33 years of age on her February 2nd birthday. If Eva were a client of mine in 1996 (I wasn't even practicing astrology yet), I would not have mentioned an upcoming death, but I would have seen a dissolution of matter happening in the 6th Natal House. Remember that Eva had Jupiter at 15 degrees Pisces in the Sixth House. So an astrologer might have seen a change in location or a change in the daily environment that was spiritually driven.

Venus transited over Eva's Jupiter on January 28, 1996, and then formed a conjunction with Saturn at 22 degrees by the time of Eva's 33rd birthday. Saturn rules the skin and Venus rules health and all of this is happening in the health house of a transit chart. Saturn crossed over Jupiter from March 5 to 11, 1995. Saturn constricts, but Saturn combined with Jupiter can also bring illness. While Jupiter is often seen as a flowing transit that comes bearing gifts, we need to broaden our idea of what gifts means and stop thinking that death is a curse.

Since Eva was born with her Sun conjunct Saturn in Aquarius, she was not only way ahead of her time, but Saturn delays success. Eva was going to find her own far-out way to achieve success, even if that was from the Great Beyond. A person with Jupiter in Pisces in either the Sixth or Twelfth House has an expanded, even multidimensional soul. She most likely enjoyed her time on earth which comes through in her joyful voice, but with Jupiter in Pisces, she would have felt lost here too, or that she just couldn't make it work in this realm.

And so in 1996, the Venus and Saturn transits in Pisces in the Sixth House played a significant role in creating dissolution in Eva's body. I suspect the cancer was already spreading in her organs as early as March 1995, but I'm not a medical expert. Other transits in this chart that point towards problems with the body, are the North Node and Chiron crossing the Ascendant (Libra) and creating an imbalance in the physical body created by thoughts, beliefs, and childhood issues coming up.

And adding to this emotional turmoil, the moon was transiting in Cancer (10th House) and opposing Mercury/Neptune/Uranus in Capricorn and squaring the North Node in Libra (transiting in the 1st House). Since Neptune/Uranus/Mercury transiting in Capricorn, we're looking at skin again since Capricorn rules the skin. And if we want to be literal, the Cancer Moon could very well represent the disease cancer. Uranus brings on the unexpected. Neptune brings dissolution of matter, and Mercury rules thoughts, such as not feeling comfortable in one's skin.

However, despite the disease creeping into Eva's body, I see success for her in 1996 or at least recognition. Saturn and Venus crossing her Natal Jupiter in the Sixth House would have caused her to take her music career to the next level. She would have applied discipline and she would have refined her craft or changed her the material she performed.

Any music she recorded and performed during that year would also bring balance to the listener and even act as a healing balm. This is because transiting Chiron and the North Node in Libra transiting in the First House would empower Eva's healing abilities. And many musicians are healers whether they have this awareness or not. Music is powerful medicine and many people believe that musicians are a type of shaman or channel. We can look at Mozart, an Aquarius as proof of that.

And let's not forget the magic of Sacred Geometry that plays out in Eva's death. She died at the age of 33 (sacred geometry which focuses on the numbers 3, 6, 9, and 12) and she died in 1996. Not only that, she died on All Soul's Day when the veils between the living and the dead are at their thinnest. And 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Eva's death and while that isn't sacred geometry it is synchronicity that I would discover her right before this anniversary and write this article.

So let's look at the death chart for November 2, 1996. This is the day when Eva left the world of form to enter the world of spirit. Once again, her Jupiter plays an important role. Her progressed Sun, now in Pisces formed a conjunction with Natal Jupiter and this happened in her Sixth House, which to me is a house of spiritual endeavors or experiences, along with the 12th House that represents dissolution of matter. Saturn now at 1 degree Aries also transited in the Sixth House. This means that it completed its passage through Pisces and 29 degrees Pisces can also represent dissolution of matter in this case, death. But Pisces rules music so that legacy lives on.

Another interesting aspect of this chart is the Progressed Moon at one degree Virgo joining up with Natal Uranus with a 3 degree orb. What this means in plain English is that each of us has progressed planets in our charts. As we age, our planets progress in degrees and signs. Astrologers look at the faster moving progressions which include the moon through Mars. This transit is important for several reasons but mainly that Uranus is the planetary ruler of Eva's Sun Sign, Aquarius.  Her Natal Chart Rulers are Uranus, Venus, and Mercury which have all played key roles in the transit charts I've presented in this article.

I'm sure that her death came as a shock to many people and even to this day because of the Progressed Moon connecting with the planet of the unexpected and shock (Uranus). Uranus was in Virgo when Eva was born and Uranus in Virgo represents technology along with Aquarius. So here we have someone who became famous through new technology (the internet). She also, in her own way, sent shockwaves through the music industry by becoming famous despite not fitting into any proscribed music genre. She wasn't glamorous, but she was an honest performer to a fault. Even though she performed and recorded cover songs, she did them her own way, instead of imitating the original singers of those songs.

Personally, in the 30 years that I devoted to reviewing music and interviewing musicians, I have not run across any musicians as uniquely powerful as Eva Cassidy. Why I had not heard of her until recently is a mystery to me. But I can tell you this, as someone who has suffered from obscurity in all my endeavors (up until now), I can relate to a person who refused to compromise her musical gifts to fit into an industry. I was the same way when I was a professional musician. Viva la Eva!

Artist Spotlight--Eva Cassidy, Patron Saint of Obscurity (Part One)

Wikipedia image
Intermediate Astrology

While I was posting my first Artist Spotlight video on YouTube (Helene Grimaud), a black and white photo of the late Eva Cassidy appeared in my feed. Oddly, in my 30 years as an arts journalist, I had not heard of this singer. I saw that the video was for her 1996 cover of "Autumn Leaves," a perennial favorite song of mine. So I clicked on the video thus changing my life...

The short biography for Eva is that she learned how to sing and play guitar as a child. Then she became a breath-taking interpreter of classic songs from various genres (mostly emotionally-charged songs). She was shy but she performed on stages in Washington, D.C. and she garnered a loyal following. She was diagnosed with skin cancer in 1993 and this seemed like it was cured. The cancer returned in 1996 and Eva succumbed to it on November 2, 1996, which also happens to be All Soul's Day. Then through a strange chain of events, Eva's songs make it to England and BBC radio hosts champion her. And Eva Cassidy experiences worldwide fame from beyond the grave. Pretty spooky, no? But also quite healing for those of us who love beautiful renderings of our favorite songs. But there's more...

Now, before we gaze in depth at Eva's charts (birth, 1993 Solar Return, and death charts), I would like to mention the parallels I have with the talented vocalist. I was born one year after Eva and I am also a vocalist and guitarist. Instead of interpreting other people's songs, I composed songs.  She resided and performed in Washington D.C. while I resided and performed in the other Washington State. I was also a solo performer with an acoustic guitar, hard to define which genre in which I performed--"not quite folk," was how one journalist described my songs.

Eva died on All Soul's Day in 1996 (November 2) and I'll explain the significance of this later in this article (her Jupiter in Pisces in the 6th House opposing Natal Pluto in the 12th House). My music career died in 1996 due to illness and the stress of toiling away at music for a decade in obscurity. So that's what Eva and I have in common. What we don't have in common is her ingenuity. She was a triple Air Sign with her Aquarius Sun, Gemini Moon, and Libra Rising Sign. And the key planet in her birth chart, transits, and progressions was Jupiter, something she shares in common with Saint Joan of Arc.

Now, I haven't had much time to research the charts or Eva's life with the exception of watching a few videos and reading her biography online. The people who knew her offered some anecdotes about her dressing like a hiker (as one colleague put it), that she was introverted and afraid to get up on stage, and that she was uncompromising (Blue Note Records Artist Rep).

As true to her Aquarius Sun, Eva was described as iconoclastic (the interpreter of nostalgic songs), but not in alignment with the usual description of a person with triple Air in their chart, Eva exuded strong emotions in her performances--so much so that I feel weepy when I hear her sing.

The other information I picked up in a channel session is that Eva orchestrated her fame from beyond the grave (I'm not beyond believing this). Not only that, with her big heart love, she helps others suffering in obscurity by helping them to get recognized. Even when she walked and sung upon the Earth, she was multi-dimensional (as we all are to an extent). She was one of those singers that could channel other singers while she performed or in the least, created an expansive space for big energy to sail through. I don't think it's a coincidence that she departed on All Soul's Day, which is also known as, The Day of the Dead or in Spanish, Dias de Los Muertos.

So now, let's gaze at her birth chart. Eva Cassidy was born on February 2, 1963, in Washington, D.C. or the District of Columbia (I also saw online that she was born in a small town in Maryland). The chart I found on Astro Data Bank used an Equal House Chart so I changed it to the Koch House System so that Pluto lands in the 12th House. But I posted the Equal House chart for the birth chart. Equal House charts are best used for people born in locations close to the poles, and this was not the case with Eva who was born in the Southeast United States.

Now, the first thing I look for in a chart reading is the triplicity of the sun/moon/ascendant which I already mentioned are in Air Signs (all three Air Signs). Then I look for clusters of planets in the form of Triple Conjunctions, Duets, and Stelliums (4 or more planets in the same sign or house).

Then I look for Grand Trines and T-Crosses or Grand Crosses. Then I look for retrograde planets, etc... So if Eva was still alive and enlisted my chart reading services, I would mention the duet with her Aquarius Sun in an exact conjunction with Saturn in the Fifth House. She also had Chiron in Pisces (8 degrees) in the same house. Talk about painful! The Fifth House represents the entertainment business, hobbies, friendships, love affairs, recreation and has Leo as its natural ruler. And Eva had the least fun planet, Saturn conjunct her sun in this house, not to mention the painful asteroid Chiron in the spiritual sign of Pisces. By the way, Saturn rules the skin, and Aquarius represents the unexpected while the sun represents outward identity and lifeforce.

Eva had three planets retrograde at the time of her birth (Mars, Uranus, and Pluto). Two of the planets were in Virgo (shy, introverted) and this is significant because her Sun's Ruler Aquarius is represented by Uranus retrograde. Then Mars in Leo (opposite her sun), was also retrograde. So here is someone who desperately wants to be under the spotlight but lacks the courage to do that. Mars and Leo are normally outward energies, but in this chart are retrograde. At least Mars and Uranus fall in the Eleventh House of colleagues, grassroots, and networking. Eva did have a loyal following while she was alive in her hometown. Then later, after her death, her fame has spanned the globe thanks to an Aquarius invention, the Internet.

Eva gets her emotional depth from Neptune in Scorpio in the Second House of gifts and talents (Neptune rules music), Jupiter in Pisces in the Sixth House, and Venus in late Sagittarius falling in the Third House of communication and genius (brain). Venus, in this case, wants to expand on beauty, which comes through in Eva's phrasing and emotional coloring. Her North Node fell in the healing and nurturing Sign Cancer. Ironically, she would also die from skin cancer which can also fall under the Zodiac Signs of Capricorn and Cancer. But mainly, this Cancer North Node brings nurturing through musical expression. Cancer is a nostalgic sign and mostly what Eva performed are songs we equate with nostalgia ("Somewhere over the Rainbow," "What a Wonderful World," and "Autumn Leaves...).

In regard to the mystery and mystic around Eva's death on All Soul's Day in 1996 and then her acquiring fame from beyond the grave, let's look at the Sixth and Twelfth Houses. Make no mistake, astrology is the best sleuth for these things. Jupiter in Pisces represents multi-dimensionality and it falls in the Sixth House of saints, martyrs, servants, service, as well as, the day-to-day environment. But in Pisces, this day-to-day environment is in concert with Spirit. If Eva had not been a singer, would she have become a medium-channeler? And did skin cancer martyr her?

Jupiter opposes Pluto (which represents death and rebirth) in a House of death and dissolution. Pluto also represents cancer, radiation (skin cancer is caused by the sun's radiation). Eva also worked with the earth as she was a gardener-landscaper by profession. Pluto, Uranus, and Mars which are the final planets in her chart and they are all retrograde (which means going backward or returning to the Source of All That Is) since Pluto lands in the 12th House. She also had Ceres in Virgo (possibly this Dwarf planet's Ruling Sign) in the 12th House, oddly, next to Pluto. And if you know the story of Persephone, Demeter, and Pluto (Hades), then you will understand the significance of this. Isn't undergoing cancer similar to slipping into the Underworld? And Ceres (Demeter) represents agriculture and growing plants, which Eva did for a living. And who is to say, but she probably got cancer from working outdoors with the sun ravishing her fair skin.

Since this post is long, I'm ending it here. However, read Part 2 where we'll gaze at Eva's Solar Return Charts for 1993 (the year her doctor diagnosed her with skin cancer), and 1996, the year of her death. But I'm thinking at this point that there is no real death. Eva's still with us, and not just in her ghostly voice haunting the YouTube streams. Her gift is with us always and we are so blessed to have access to her demo songs.
