The Aquarius Full Moon (July 23, 2021), Twisties, and Gymnastics

True Gold and the Character of a Soul

While I try to avoid distractions, the Olympic Games has captured my attention and the US gymnastic team in particular. The Olympic Games opened on the day of the Aquarius Full Moon so that alone put viewers on alert for something unusual to take place. The Olympic Games always bring surprises with world records shattered by young athletes, injuries, accidents, and during the 1972 Olympics, athletes were held hostage by a Palestinian terrorist group called Black September. Four years later, another gymnast held the world's eyes captive and that was the Romanian athlete Nadia Comenci who was the first gymnast to score Perfect 10s.

While I don't know where the planets were transiting in 1972 when the hostage event took place, we are reminded of the precarious situation when the world's nations send their best athletes to one spot in the world to compete for the Gold (Leo rules gold). While it's normally a peaceful competition and we hope filled with good will and support for other athletes as well as, mature sportsmanship, it's not uncommon for theatrics and drama, or sometimes tragedies to unfold as would happen with bringing humanity together.

But the 2021 World Olympics has brought us Aquarius themes due to the Aquarius Full Moon marking the beginning of the games which end around the time of the Leo New Moon in July 8 (actually July 10 is the closing day for the games). And records are being shattered as super athletes break through the barriers of what is possible. And underneath the competitive spirit (which seems more cooperative than with previous generations), there is a sense of responsibility and fairness, at least among the athletes who all made sacrifices to arrive in Tokyo to dazzle the world with their amazing skills.

And you might ask, well, besides living during a time of pandemic restrictions, how is this Olympic Games any different than previous ones? And for that, we need to look at the chart for the first Aquarius Full Moon which was for July 23, 2021. And we must remember, that Uranus and Aquarius are key players in 2021 bringing us the unexpected at every turn whether that comes in the form of strange weather, freaky science, or odd events dealing with neurological conditions.

The Full Moon transited on the same degree that the Grand Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn at 1 degree Aquarius from December 21, 2020, which alone carries the weight of the strange events. And if we look at the chart of one athlete in particular, Simone Biles (US gymnast), we'll see that transiting Uranus in Taurus squared her Natal Jupiter and Uranus (although the square with Uranus is wide). We'll also see that Neptune retrograde transiting at 23 degrees Pisces conjunct her Natal Sun exact. While the North Node in Gemini approached an opposition to her Sagittarius Ascendant (but the chart I have for Simone has a C-rating). Jupiter is the chart ruler for Simone so that's significant.

Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto were all retrograde. Venus moved into Virgo forming an inconjunct with the Aquarius Full Moon and squared Simone's Natal Pluto (which would cause the gymnast not to risk injury or death). Remember Pluto represents death and in Sagittarius could represent an exaggeration of death. The celebrated gymnast was suffering from a neurological situation called the twisties in which an athlete's brain and body are disconnected when the athlete is up in the air and can't tell up from down. This is dangerous when gymnasts are flipping in the air and having to land squarely on their feet. Landing on one's neck is not an option.

The Aquarius Full Moon brought up issues with mental health and the neurological system. The Leo Sun in opposition brought up winning the prize (in this case a Gold Medal). The Leo Sun focuses on the individual and victory for an individual but the Aquarius Full Moon looks at the greater good and the entire team. So, the 24-year-old athlete pulled herself out of the competition to protect her health and to set strong boundaries. She took responsibility for her safety and set strong boundaries around the sport and this idea or concept of "pushing through the pain" and applying grit to a situation. That would have been the old way of doing things but now, a shift of a paradigm has occurred.

Simone, with her Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Pisces and her Moon in logical Gemini (the transiting North Node is approaching her Natal Moon by 7 degrees), placed her mental health before her Olympic dream. Not only that, she supported her teammates Sunisa Lee, Mykayla Skinner and Jade Carey (who also stepped up to the plate) as they earned Olympic medals for the team and for themselves. This is in the millennial spirit--this era of sharing and cooperation. And really what we see here is a beautiful story unfolding with echoes of the Divine Feminine. I admire these women, not so much for their victories, but for their support of each other and their willingness to set boundaries.

However, another story emerged around Mykayla Skinner who trained even when she was suffering from COVID. And this brings up that practice again of pushing the physical and mental body to its limits. We might question if that's even healthy. And of course, a single-minded pursuit at the expense of our well-being never is  a healthy choice. And yet, some people could say that she went on to win medals. I just hope that she doesn't send the  wrong message out to young gymnast who are inspired by her because there are many dangers in the sport with gravity defying acrobatics, with no better words to describe it. And we can apply this also to figure skating.

Would this story be playing out if the Full Moon was in Pisces or another sign? No. The unusual story around the neurological condition faced by gymnast at a major world event fits snugly under the Aquarius Full Moon at one degree opposing the Leo Sun. Meanwhile, transiting Uranus in Taurus as well as, transiting Saturn in Aquarius (10 degrees RX) and the Neptune transit at 23 (RX) degrees Pisces play key roles with Simone Biles' Natal Chart. What we experience is a different sort of heroism that defies all athlete and sports logic.

The Aquarius Full Moon also brought us the most quirky Olympic Games ever where there are no spectators with the family and friends of the athletes appearing via Zoom or satellite video footage. This proves that it is a small world after all, as the children's song once told us. Gone are the pompous and overbearing announcers, the over-priced event tickets, the tourists, and the mayhem of the usual Olympic Games crowding the host city. But also it's more challenging for athletes to rally the enthusiasm for their respective events without the cheering crowds, even if their teammates shout out their support.

The other thing I want to point out is that Simone Biles has Mars conjuct the North Node in the late degrees of Virgo. This is a woman with a great gift of discernment but also someone who is a perfectionist. You know that as an athlete she has often pushed her body and mind to the limits but in the case of the 2021 Olympic Games she overcame delusional thinking and equally suffered from a serious mental health issue with transiting Neptune conjuncting her Natal Sun. And some people believe that astrology has no validity. Transiting Neptune also conjunct the planet of logic Mercury which Biles has in Pisces and challenged her North Node and Mars in Virgo. It looks like logic and rational thinking won the day.

Usually a Pisces Sun/Mercury person is someone who holds big dreams inside themselves. But at the same time, they also are compassionate people who understand Unity Consciousness whether they talk about this spiritual concept or not. We can only wonder what will transpire from Simone Biles mature and responsible handling of a situation that affects all athletes at some point in their career (and that is pushing the body and mind to the limits). In a sense, she emerges as both an underdog from a minority group to a hero on the world stage. Sometimes, the lesson learned is more important than the Gold Medal.
