Zodiac Friendships (And the Lessons We Glean From Each Sign)

 

Often we focus on incompatibility with the Zodiac Signs. And yet, the most powerful lessons come from people who are of the signs we think we should avoid. Squares and oppositions can work in our favor if we learn how to master the energy. And cutting out half the people of the world based on their Zodiac Sign or dominant elements is a mistake we can avoid.

I'm going to include the signs in groups: Cardinal, Mutable, and Fixed and what you can expect as far as friendship from people born under each Zodiac Sign.

CARDINAL SIGNS

Aries--Fire, Mars

Cancer--Water, Moon

Libra--Air, Venus

Capricorn--Earth, Saturn

Cardinal Sign people are pushy. Depending on their element and planetary ruler, they push us in different ways. Aries represents Fire and the planet of war, Mars. While all four signs have motivational coaching abilities, Aries is the one that shoves us into new realities. Aries people might seem foolish at times as they head over the cliff with their dog underneath their arm, but they have a sense of humor and a can-do attitude. They won't allow us to get stuck in the doldrums or to hang out on the couch. Life's an adventure and Aries reminds us of that.

Aries is also the person who steps in when no one else will help us. This is because they like a challenge and they are the emergency response team of the Zodiac. You need a proverbial fire to put out, call on your Aries friends. They won't let you down.

The Cancer Sun person pushes us in a different way than Aries. Cancer people surf through emotions and they believe that holistic health comes from exploring ones emotions. Cancer is the healer of the Cardinal Signs and even when they seem annoying they want the best for you. They nurture and nourish their friends. They will cook chicken soup (or vegan "chicken" soup) for their friends who are ill. They will also take care of your houseplants and garden when you're away. Some will even pet sit for you for free. Also, out of the four Cardinal Signs, Cancer rules the home and the mother. They will open their home to you, provided they feel you are safe to be around. Cancerian friends also know how to comfort others, the way they wish others would comfort them. Remember to reciprocate if you don't want a resentful Cancerian ex-friend.

Libra friends bring in logic and fairness. They help us make decisions by showing us both sides of the proverbial scale. They don't like to argue, but they will engage in a debate, which they'll often win. They are the friends who invite you to a dinner party so that you can make new friends. Or because Libras are romantic by nature (Venus) they will set you up with people they think are a good match for you. When I think of Libra friends, Jane Austen comes to mind. She was obsessed with relationships and marriage. One last thing about Libra friends, they won't allow us to stay stuck in gloom. They are optimistic and will do everything to lift us out of a dark mood. They believe strongly that our thoughts create our reality. So, stop obsessing about the end of the world, okay.

Capricorn friends take a while to get to know. They don't open up to people easily because one, they are more focused on their family of origin or their work. They are super cautious, as are Cancer people. They believe that a life of hard knocks brings us wisdom and experience. So, they will say, "Lift yourself up by your own bootstraps." Yes, those are harsh words to hear when you lost your job or your home. 

This doesn't mean that Capricorn friends will kick you out of their lives. They just want you to put in the efforts to improve your situation. Since Saturn is their planetary ruler and they are a stodgy Earth Sign, they have practical approaches to address your problems. If you're a fay dreamer, this will rub you the wrong way. But don't forget, Capricorn people haven't had an easy life either. They have their own problems which they resolve through hard work. This is the way of the mountain goat. Climb your mountain and achieve success, even if it feels lonely at the top. Once you make friends with a Capricorn, you have a friend for life.

MUTABLE SIGNS

Gemini--Air, Mercury

Virgo--Earth, Mercury

Sagittarius--Fire, Jupiter

Pisces--Water, Jupiter and Neptune

Just like the song lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, "Girls just want to have fun," Gemini people enjoy friends who are delightful to be around. They're not party animals, but they love to explore different topics and experiences out of curiosity. They enjoy puzzles, board games, and intellectual challenges. But mostly they enjoy a good conversation with interesting facts (not opinions) tossed into the mix. Some Gemini people desire friendships with metaphysical or magical people. Remember that the The Magician in the Tarot deck is ruled by Gemini. If you want to meet Gemini people, hang out at a radio station, listen to podcast channels where people leave comments, join a forum, join a book club, or take a lifelong learning class at your local community center. I've known many Gemini people in my lifetime (I have Venus and Mars in Gemini) and I've met them through groups, music venues, or online. I've met some through writing groups and conferences.

Virgo is the least earthy of the Earth Signs but don't allow that to fool you. Even though Virgos have a quick mind and are often critical of other people's behaviors, they actually have good intentions. They are perfectionists but only to the point where they feel imperfect themselves. They enjoy writing letters to editors and publishing opinion pieces or reviewing products, including music CDs or DVDs. Similar to Gemini, you meet these folks in the realm of communications or entertainment. Or you might meet them through a Reiki circle or group of some kind. You might also meet them through cooking or nutrition classes because they are obsessed with diet. Virgos are dependable and even when they are scathingly critical, they actually don't realize they have hurt your feelings. Knowing this bit of information will preserve the friendship.

Sagittarius are one of the two most challenging signs to understand. But once you understand that a Sagittarius person requires loads of space and tons of freedom to explore the planet (and beyond), you can enjoy a friendship with Sagittarius. They are awesome travel buddies or perhaps, they will take you rock climbing or camping in the Rockies. Give a Sag friend the space to share their tall tales and other travel stories. Yes, they are opinionated and they wax on about philosophy or religion or the laws of the land, but if you sit back and listen, you might learn something new. You might change your perspective or perception after spending time with a Sag friend. And while you won't see this person every day of your life (please don't cling to them), when you do spend time with a Sag you'll notice that your mood has transformed and you feel more optimistic about your life. Expand your consciousness, says Sag. And they mean it.

Pisces friends need space to mind travel. They want space to meditate and to explore their unique spiritual paths. If you want to meet Pisces people, show up at performing arts events or take music classes. Join a drum or sound healing circle or sign up for a card reading at a local spiritual shop. Chances are your card reader was born under the sign of Pisces. Sign up for a voice or dance lesson or join a yoga class. Similar to Sagittarius, Pisces don't care for clingy people. Freedom means everything to them and that includes the freedom to have their own beliefs, unquestioned by their friends. While you're just as likely to meet a Pisces friend at an AA group, you can also meet them at a Reiki circle or gem and crystal shop. Or perhaps, you just watch a Pisces friend perform original music at a nightclub. Pisces friends will swim in and out of your life. But when the going gets tough, they will show up to help you out. They exude compassion and they enjoy helping the underdog, similar to Cancerians.

FIXED SIGNS

Aquarius--Air, Uranus and Saturn

Taurus--Earth, Venus (possibly Ceres)

Leo--Fire, Sun

Scorpio--Water, Mars, Pluto

Aquarius friends are another hard nut to crack. On one hand, Aquarius lives in the future and is ten steps ahead of the crowd, but on the other hand, these friends are stubborn. They won't change their fixed opinions no matter what argument against those beliefs you present. They are also an Air Sign so they tend to lean towards seeing life through the mental lens. They prefer logic to emotions. They care more about what you think than what you feel. These friends are also unique in some way and march to a beat of a different drummer which is uncomfortable to be around if you're more conventional or traditional. But Aquarius friends will introduce you to new realms. They're the ones who introduce us to tuning forks and frequencies. They're the first to learn Reiki in a group of friends. They enjoy conversations about star races, the origins of humanity, and finding solutions to loss causes.

But Aquarius people need their space and they won't always advocate for that. You need to know when to end a conversation and to walk away, allowing Aquarius people to work their ingenuity upon the world. They are humanitarians and see the group as more important than the individual. So, if you're searching for an exciting friend to stick by your side 24/7, choose another Zodiac Sign. Aquarius friends are people you connect with once in a while and you know that your life will be changed in some way after these encounters. Uniqueness is the gift of the Aquarius friend.

Taurus people enjoy the creature comforts. These aren't the friends who will want to hang out in a tent on the side of a mountain for several days. They aren't the kind of friends who can live off granola and power bars so that you can go hiking or rock climbing. Camping for these friends revolves around a vacation rental (cottage or cabin) close to eateries and places to relax. They want the finer things in life such as gourmet food but they'll settle for delicious rustic food made by the hands of locals. Taurus people love the arts. They enjoy gardening and joining others to create community gardens. They enjoy making aromatherapy blends and getting a massage. They are wonderful friends to share a spa day with or to take a luxury vacation. They also enjoy shopping for clothing, pottery, and the finer things in life. Don't depress your Taurus friends with shabby gifts. You might like shopping at thrift and discount stores, but Taurus friends find that beneath them. They will act gracious because of their Venus signature but they will stew behind your back. Shabby anything hurts the feelings of your Taurus friends. (Leo also desires the royal treatment from their friends).

And speaking for Leo, if you're seeking a true friend from the heart, look no further than this sunny sign. Just make sure that you give them the stage and the spotlight so that they can perform for you. They love to share stories of their adventures and their hard times too. They will motivate you to get creative whether that's solving personal problems or creating art. If you want to engage a Leo friend, do so with color. Dress in colorful clothing. Use vibrant language, and give them gifts from the heart so that they know you thought about them. Invite them to attend a concert or a theatrical performance (Leo rules theater) or go to the newest restaurant in town. Don't forget to dress in your fancy clothing. And always thank a Leo friend when they have shown their generous side. It feels like a privilege to have a Leo as a friend.

Scorpio friends are often misunderstood. That's because there are at least two types of Scorpio friends--the ex-friend and the lifelong friend. The ex-friend possessed the lower octave of the sign Scorpio. They might have used their stinger on you or simply cancelled you out of existence. Yes, Scorpio people have a dark and vengeful side. But they also have a sense of humor, they are courageous, and when you have impressed a Scorpio friend they become a healing force in your life. You can talk about shadows and darker topics, even taboo topics, and they don't flinch. They are similar to Persephone in that they traveled to the dark side and through the light in their hearts returned to the present moment unscathed. They are shamans, healers, and powerful transformers. If you don't ruffle their feathers, a Scorpio friend will be there until the end of your life and they might even provide hospice care.

Obviously, not all people represented by the 12 Zodiac Signs will match these descriptions 100 percent. These are generalities that I discovered in my own friendships and from ten years practicing as a professional astrologer. I've been a follower of astrology since my youth and yes, I read many astrology cookbooks based on the 12 Zodiac Signs (cookbook is a term used to describe the astrology books that focus on the 12 Zodiac Signs and not cookery).
